Minot Area Community Foundation’s Power of the Purse launches Bus Pass Challenge

The Minot Area Community Foundation’s Power of the Purse Giving Circle has launched a Bus Pass Challenge to help get bus passes into the hands of students who may be struggling to get to school. Power of the Purse will match all donations up to $5,040 through the end of January 2022.

One of the biggest challenges facing educators is just getting students to school. The city bus is an option for most kids, but often families cannot afford a bus pass. The issue of not being able to easily get to and from school effects students in multiple ways. Not only do their grades suffer, but schools have seen a very high rate of anxiety among students.

Power of the Purse has pledged to grant up to $5,040 in matching funds for the purchase of bus passes for students. A one-month city bus pass is $28. The goal is to provide Minot Public Schools with 360 one-month passes.

“Jim Hill has seen a high number of students who need bus passes,” says, Shannon Ostrom, Jim Hill Dean of Students. “In talking with the other Deans at the Minot Public Schools, I have learned that this is an issue district wide. Being able to provide passes to kids is such a blessing! So many families will benefit from this gift! We are so grateful for our partnership with Power of the Purse and with the members of our community!”
The challenge will go through the end of January 2022. You can donate to the bus pass challenge by visiting @powerofthepurseminot on Facebook or by visiting www.centerforcommunitygiving.com/powerofthepurse.
