How to Become A Donor
Minot Area Recovery Fund
At the Minot Area Community Foundation, we take seriously our commitment to and track record of both excellent stewardship of donated funds and the wise investment of those funds through grants to quality nonprofit programs benefiting the citizens and communities of the Minot Area.
That is why from day one of learning of the historic flood of 2011, MACF, in conjunction with city officials, community leaders and relief organizations, has been at the forefront of planning disaster response - to maximize the effect of contributions for our community to recover.
The Minot Area Community Foundation will play an active role in flood relief, through the establishment of the Minot Area Recovery Fund by providing an initial contribution of $250,000. The fund will support relief and restoration throughout the greater Minot area, including the counties of Ward, Renville, Bottineau and McHenry. We will also facilitate gifts from donors who have specific instructions for the kinds of projects they want to support for flood relief.
We are committed on getting people's lives restored from the flood, stretching every dollar and making highly informed grant decisions, while retaining flexibility to address emerging needs.
Approximately 12,000 people are displaced from their homes. Many evacuees are living with friends and family members, which shows the caring and generous spirit of the Minot Community.
It is estimated that 20% of Minot has sustained damage from the flood. Over 4,000 homes have been affected: 2,376 of those homes have extensive damage from 6-10 feet of water and 805 of the 4,100 homes are completely damaged beyond repair. Half of our public schools have been affected by the flood with six of our local schools completely inundated with water and two others having water pumped out of their basements.
At this time officials are anticipating $300 million or more in damage. Unfortunately, only $40-$45 million has been identified for potential buyouts for the individuals who will have completely lost their homes. That would provide each of the 805 families who have suffered complete loss approximately $50,000 to rebuild a new home.
In response to the massive devastation caused by the historic flood of 2011, the Minot Area Community Foundation has established the Minot Area Recovery Fund. It became apparent early on that the recovery needs would be even greater than we first realized, which is why MACF has identified its focus to help citizens clean up, restore and rebuild their homes and remain in our community.
